About Our Laboratory

Spreading original Japan technology worldwide

Associate Professor

Dr. Etsuko Miyamoto-Sato

Technological developments have driven progress in science and medicine. For example, we can amplify any gene of interest for thorough investigation. Moreover, we can obtain our own genetic information using the state-of-the-art DNA sequencing technologies. The research base of the Interactome Medical Sciences Laboratory is "Puromycin Technology" (See Research), which is an original Japan analysis tool for investigating comprehensive biomolecular interactions called the "interactome". Towards the "personalized medicine" era, we will apply this technology to medical research. In particular, we focus on "cancer" because of its diversity and individuality. An interdisciplinary approach is required to accomplish our research goals, which involves collaboration with system biologists of human genome center, in addition to cancer researchers. In the human genome center, a large amount of sequence data generated from next generation sequencers has been intensively analyzed using supercomputers. As a joint effort between industry and academia, some companies are involved in our research.

Message to prospective students: You have infinite possibilities. There is a saying, "No research is interesting from the beginning. All interesting research is made interesting by someone. Be that someone." I learned this saying in the Mitsubishi Kagaku Institute of Life Sciences (MITILS) where I spent my graduate school days. Around the world, much important research is taking place. However, research that is interesting or has an immediate impact is limited. New fields of important, yet hitherto overlooked, research fall into that category. Furthermore, a new field might become the next important field of science. I believe that you have the potential to be a pioneer of a new research field. I want you to think of ways of opening a new world for yourself. It will of course be a pleasure for me to guide you through your studies in our laboratory.
